In the classroom, the students develop skills in clothing design, sketching and illustration, patternmaking and draping, garment construction, textiles, critical analysis, and computer-aided design. The curriculum offers exposure to business practices, marketing and presentation, which is critical to the success of apparel lines and brands. Students learn to develop their collections and have opportunities to exhibit their creations in fashion shows and competitions, including the College’s annual fashion show which is student planned, produced and executed.
APPAREL ACCESSORY DESIGN
Apparel Accessory Design combines form and function to make that perfect outfit complete. The program encompasses a broad but focused range of craftsmanship, command over materials, and rigorous problem solving. Students learn the techniques to create the products that customers demand. Always staying with the seasons and being on top of the current trends is a must!
FASHION MARKETING
Fashion Marketing is a program that exposes students to the apparel industry from a business standpoint, giving them the knowledge and skills needed to effectively market companies, create advertising campaigns and identify appropriate messaging to target demographics. Classes in retail buying, direct marketing development, and merchandising using 3-D software prepare students for senior level product development projects that are completed in tandem with students majoring in the College’s other apparel programs. The annual Spring fashion show is just one of the many opportunities for fashion marketing students to get involved in the many facets of the fashion world.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
Graphic Design is the art of visualizing ideas. From logos to brochures, book covers to billboards, video games to web sites, traffic signs to traffic tickets; graphic design plays a part in nearly every aspect of our visual culture. Graphic communication permeates every home, every business, every industry, everybody. Put simply, graphic design is the art of visualizing ideas. The Art Institute of Portland begins by helping students develop basic skills in design, illustration, typography and computer technology. Students learn how to become creative problem-solvers, offering solutions that are successful in the business and art of visual communication. Advanced courses include the execution of assignments overseen by professionals in the field. Students graduate from the Graphic Design program with the skills and portfolio required for an entry-level position in graphic design.
